The Honourable
The Colonial Secretary,
Sir,
HongKong Station,
8th.February 1899.
Some little time ago I drew the attention
of my Directors to the Scheme, then being ventilated in the
local press, for the laying of electric tramways on the trolly
system along the lower levels of this city.
The prospect is viewed with much concern,
and I have now the honour to request on behalf of the Eastern
Extension and Great Northern Telegraph Companies that, should
such a scheme be brought before the Government, His Excellency
the Governor would be good enough to give them an opportunity
of representing the serious injury which they are confident
would enevitably result to the Sub-marine telegraph service
from the introduction of such system and of claiming the
protection, against disturbances to working, which they are
confident would be afforded them.
Unfortunate experiences with electric
tramways at other important cable stations have supplied ample grounds for their fears in this respect, and it is therefore
hoped that by a timely representation of the case, similar
experiences at this important telegraph centre may be avoided.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient servant
(Sd.)J.A.Beck,
Ag Manager-in-China.
